Dairy Free Waffles

These dairy free waffles are made without milk or butter but are still incredibly delicious. This quick and easy recipe is perfect for the weekends.

I love dairy free waffles. In fact, I think I may even love them more than dairy free pancakes.

If you ask me, there is just something wonderful about the texture and the way they hold syrup.

However, my favorite way to eat waffles is with ice cream as a dessert.

History of Waffles

In ancient times, the Greeks cooked flat cakes, called obelios, between hot metal plates. These are the ancestor to waffles.

Obelios spread throughout medieval Europe and were also cooked over an open fire between iron plates with long handles.

At this time, the first known waffle recipe was written by a French man with instructions to his young wife of how to make them.

Waffles eventually became so popular in France, that King Francis had a set of waffle irons cast in pure silver.

While the Dutch had established waffles in New Amsterdam (New York City). It wasn't until the 1700s that recipes started to be printed in English and spread throughout England and America.

GLUTEN FREE OPTION

Substitute all-purpose gluten-free flour in place of all-purpose regular flour cup for cup.

Or you can use Oat flour which is made from whole oats that have been ground into a powder, which can easily be done at home.

Substitute 1 cup of all-purpose flour for 1 ⅓ cup oat flour.  To make 1 cup of oat flour, blend 1 ¼ cups of oats in a food processor until finely ground.

Or you can make my oat flour waffles.

Note: oats must be marked gluten-free because they can get cross-contaminated in the factory.

Eggless Option:

To make these dairy free waffles eggless, replace each egg with ¼ cup of water.

Or make my dairy free egg free waffles.
